Living with water

Description:Living with Water - In the water-rich region between IJmuiden, Amsterdam-West, Gouda and Wassenaar, the Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland works every day to keep our feet dry and to ensure clean and sufficient water. This is done in close cooperation with residents, businesses and other partners, with continuous attention to the environment, nature and landscape.Ninety percent of this area lies below sea level. Combined with climate change, this creates major challenges such as drought and flooding. These are not problems for the distant future — immediate action is necessary. That is why strong efforts are being made towards sustainable and innovative solutions, ensuring that safe living, working and recreation in the west of the Netherlands will remain guaranteed in the future.

The Bloemencorso Bollenstreek flower parade passes through several municipalities where Rijnland is active. This parade float shows what this work entails and why water management is essential. Dikes and dunes provide protection against flooding, while the main pumping station regulates water levels and maintains good water quality. Work on this has continued day and night since 1255.
